Rinexii’s Obligatory Covid-19 Statement

Since the beginning of the novel coronavirus outbreak, Rinexii has been silent. We posted a couple of articles already finished that merely needed to go live, and then failed to post at all for many weeks now. This isn’t due to lack of information about what’s going on environmentally speaking, but more that it felt inappropriate to talk about the environmental benefits of a deadly pandemic that has cost the lives of thousands of people.

Now that some time has passed, we have more or less adapted to a new normal. People are still dying and getting sick, but more of us are looking for ways to move forward without causing even more damage. I feel like it is time for Rinexii to move forward too, but in order to do so, we need to address the elephant in the room.

Covid-19 has ravaged our economy, disrupted our supply chains, and strained our health care to the utmost, but it has reduced the carbon emissions of the planet. As countries have one by one ventured into lock down, the results for the environment have been positive. New Delhi and China are experiencing clean air like they’ve never had before. Whales and birds are thriving due to the reduced sound pollution.

This is good news for the environment, but the price tag has been bad for the humans who have to live through it. Millions of people have become infected, thousands have died, and as much as 50% of the US population alone has experienced job loss over Covid-19.

Even more people are dying from the mental strain of dealing with this crisis, and from the confusion caused by leaders around the world. The environmental benefits

Although we are experiencing a temporary downturn in Co2 levels, past dips in Co2 have shown that this will change as soon as the economy improves. It’s not sustainable. Not only is it unsustainable, but it’s possible the pandemic will cause countries to ease restrictions on fossil fuels due to economic struggles, causing more harm to the planet.

My hope is that we will rebuild our infrastructure with green technology that will allow us to rebuild in a better, stronger, and sustainable fashion. I hope that we will come out of this having grown in some way, and that there is a silver lining beyond temporary improvements.

As for Rinexii, we’re going to go back to reporting on the environment again, and we hope to be adding some new features to the website soon.

For now, we hope you stay safe, stay healthy, and stay sane. 2020 has been a crazy year so far.
